Cryovac® OS Films Honored at 17th Annual DuPont Awards
Oxygen Scavenging Protects Flexplay Technologies Movie DVDs
DUNCAN, S.C. (August 9, 2004) - Sealed Air Corporation has been awarded one of the packaging industry’s most important national honors, at the 17th DuPont Awards for Innovation in Packaging. This year’s nod is for Sealed Air’s Cryovac® OS Films, a proprietary oxygen scavenging technology used by Flexplay Technologies for its customized ez-D™ DVD package.* The award-winning Cryovac® OS Films package merited the Silver Award, which recognizes technology behind new packaging.
The Cryovac® OS Films maintain the stringent oxygen-free environment needed during the distribution, display and sale of the ez-D™ discs. The Flexplay-enabled DVD has a 48-hour limited viewing window that begins when the disc is removed from its package. Once exposed to air, an oxidation reaction begins that renders the Flexplay DVD unplayable after the specified viewing period elapses. Sealed Air has been working with Flexplay Technologies for several years developing a specialized oxygen scavenging package that meets Flexplay’s rigorous specifications.
The core technology of Cryovac® OS Systems is a proprietary polymer component that is a layer of the multi-layer film. The scavenger is part of the packaging film and invisible to the naked eye, giving consumers a clear view of the product. Cryovac® OS Films scavenging action is initiated "on demand" by a patented Cryovac® ultraviolet light triggering system as the DVD’s are packaged.
In determining the DuPont winner, the judges considered the degree of innovation and the impact the product will have on the industry.
*Ez-D™ is a trademark of Flexplay Technologies.
