PIZZA BOXES FOUND IN ITALY CONTAINING CRITICAL CHEMICALS
Studies conducted by Italian laboratories in Pavia and Milan showed significant presence of potentially toxic substances in pizza boxes. The analyzed substances as benzene, phenols and phthalates - some are known as carcinogens - are most probably released from the cardboard boxes. They might migrate into the food, especially if the hot pizza (of about 60°C) is in direct contact with the box.
These substances might derive from adhesives and brightening additives, added to the recycled cardboard to improve appearance. However using recycled cardboard for this application is not legal, as the Italian law demands cellulose packaging for moisture containing food, which is used to produce virgin cardboard.
