CIAA LAUNCHES NUTRITIONAL LABELLING

In July the CIAA - the European food and drink industry trade association - announced that members have committed to recommend signpost nutritional labels on front of pack.

The recommendation contains, that beside the calories per pack also the percentage amount of the GDA (Guideline Daily Amount), representing these calories, will be put on the label. The voluntary initiative is in line with the food industry scheme, which was launched by Danone, Kraft, Kellogg's, Nestle, and Pepisco in UK. On the back side the label is going to contain the list of eight nutrients as carbohydrate, protein, energy, sugars, fat, saturated fat, sodium and fibre. The new label offensive will be introduced to the end the year.

According to the CIAA announcement, the recommendation should encourage the food industry to provide nutritional information in a standardized way. The CIAA takes a step forward, as European Commission is currently reviewing labelling legislation, also raising the question if nutritional labelling should be mandatory.
